5 Key Practices for Hair Growth That Have Nothing to Do With Genetics

5 Key Practices for Hair Growth That Have Nothing to Do With Genetics

How you can finally start retaining length and see the growth you’ve been chasing, no crazy tips or “magic genetics” required!

For years, I felt completely stuck with my hair length. It didn’t matter how many deep conditioners I slathered on, no matter what miracle product a friend recommended—I’d reach a certain point (maybe bra strap length on a good day), and then… nothing. It felt like my hair just stopped growing.

But here’s the truth:

"Your hair doesn't just stop growing at a certain length, but it feels like it does."

Does that sound familiar? Trust me, you’re not alone. After 15+ years in the natural hair care world—making my own products, learning from experts, and talking to countless people in the community—I want to share the real, practical tips that made the difference for me (yes, even to the point where I achieved butt-length hair at 48!)

FACT: Hair growth isn’t just about genetics. Length retention is everything if you want to see those real inches, especially in communities where it’s said that long, healthy hair is just “good genes.”

This guide is packed with what actually works—in-depth, simple habits anyone can use, regardless of hair type, but especially for Black women who’ve heard that “long hair just isn’t possible.” Spoiler: it IS.

Why Your Hair "Stops Growing" (And Why It Doesn’t)

Let’s clear up the biggest myth at the start:
Your hair doesn’t suddenly reach a “max” length and just quit. What actually happens is a cycle of breakage, dryness, manipulation, and damage (sometimes stuff you don’t even notice!) that stops you from retaining what you’re growing.

People will look at someone with long, healthy, natural hair and say, “She’s just lucky! It’s her genetics.” This way of thinking is especially common in the Black community, but it’s a total myth. The real secret is about what you do to keep every millimeter your scalp produces safe.

So, let’s dig into the practices that actually work. No scalp massages, no miracle oils, and—best part—nothing that depends on your DNA.

Practice #1: Truly Understand Your Hair

Let’s be all the way real: a lot of us don’t really know what our hair needs, or even exactly what we’re working with.
I can’t count how many times I’ve been approached at a hair event and someone says,
“Can you recommend some products for me?”
I answer, “Sure! Tell me about your hair.”
Immediately:

  • “Oh, I don’t know.”
  • “Let me ask my stylist.”

Here’s why that’s a problem:

“Having a hairstylist that you can depend on and you trust is great. You should have that. However, you should not put all of your trust into your hairstylist.

Knowing your own hair’s needs is an empowering first step, and it’s the most important foundation for growth.

What Does “Understanding Your Hair” Really Mean?

  • Know your hair type, porosity, density, and texture. Is it fine, medium, or coarse? Low, normal, or high porosity? Sparse or dense?
  • Figure out how your hair reacts to products and manipulation. Is it prone to dryness? Does it break or split easily? How does it behave in humidity, or after washing?
  • Keep a hair journal. Write down which products you use, how your hair feels afterward, what styles last the longest, and what causes tangling/breakage.

“You can have the fanciest products and the most expensive tools, but if you don’t know what your hair actually needs, none of that will matter.”

Why Is This Especially Important for Black Women?

There’s a powerful myth that Black hair “can’t grow long” or “just breaks no matter what.” In reality, most hair struggles boil down to not having the right routine (often: not knowing what you even need to fix).
When you understand your hair, you make confident choices—you stop copying routines from others and build your own blueprint.

How to Start Understanding Your Hair

  • Ask yourself: What makes it feel moisturized? When does it get dry? How fast does it tangle?
  • Take quizzes like the Wonder Curl Curly Hair Quiz. They help as a starting point.
  • Do regular “check-ins”—run your hands along your strands, look for weak spots or splits, notice how your hair responds after each step of your wash day.

Practice #2: Invest Time in Your Hair (Yes, It’s Worth It!)

There’s a straight-up reality we have to face:
Long, healthy hair takes time and consistency. Not everyone wants to hear that.
I’ve had plenty of friends openly say, “I wish my hair could be long like yours.” But then I tell them my wash day can take up to four hours—every week!
The reaction? “I don’t have that kind of time.”

But seriously…

“As my hair grew longer, that meant I was going to have to put more time and energy into my hair. And I know that it’s worth it.”

Why Does Hair Maintenance Take So Much Time?

  • More length = more hair to detangle, cleanse, style, and protect.
  • Black hair needs extra hydration and protection to avoid breakage.
  • Dense, curly, or coily hair textures demand more patience—rushing leads to tangles and lost length.

Is It All Worth It?

If you’ve ever envied someone’s hair or hoped for a big “glow up,” ask yourself:
Are you honestly ready to invest time?
It’s like saving money, or working out: “length retention” pays off if you stick with it, but there’s no shortcut.

Practical Steps for Smart Time Investment:

  • Break your routine into manageable chunks: Detangle before you get in the shower, section hair for easier handling, use tools that cut down on styling time.
  • Stretch styles for longer wear: Protective styles don’t have to be time-consuming daily.
  • Choose wash days wisely: Maybe it’s Sunday self-care, maybe it’s midweek—just don’t skip because you’re tired.

The Takeaway

Not every tip is “sexy” or exciting, but if you’re serious about growth, make peace with the investment. Those hours are for you.

Practice #3: Use Quality Products — Know What’s in Your Bottles

One of the most common struggles I see (and hear!) is dryness, breakage, and frizz—where every style just looks thirsty. I’ve met so many people at events stuck in the product “guessing game.”
Someone once said to me:

“I don’t know, it’s the one in the purple bottle, the one with the logo of the woman with the curly hair…”

We grab whatever is on sale, whatever’s trending, or whatever promises “moisture” on the label. But do you actually know what’s inside and what works for you?

What Sets Quality Products Apart?

  • Quality ingredients matter: Look for real oils, butters, herbal extracts, not just silicone or alcohol-heavy formulas.
  • Knowing what your hair responds to: Just because something says “hydrating” doesn’t mean it works for your texture or porosity.
  • Consistency over hype: A product you know works is more valuable than whatever a TikTok influencer is hyping up this week.

My Honest Recommendation

I use Wonder Curl products almost exclusively—from my pixie cut days all the way up to now. Find what works and stick with it—your hair won’t “get used to it” and stop benefiting.

What to Look For:
  • Products with quality oils and butters—these lock in moisture and protect the strand.
  • For defined styles: stylers with polyquats, panthenol, and similar ingredients that strengthen and also condition.
  • Avoid any products with ingredients you know your hair dislikes (for example, certain proteins or harsh surfactants).

Where to Discover the Right Products

  • Ask for real-world referrals (not just what’s popular on social media).
  • Pay attention to ingredients, not just the front label.
  • Try quizzes or in-depth diagnostic tools, like the Wonder Curl Curly Hair Quiz, to match products for your unique needs.

“We need to spend a little bit more time into paying attention and understanding the products that we're using, so that way you'll know whether or not to buy it. Again.”

Practice #4: Build a Consistent Hair Routine

Now that you really know your hair, are willing to put in the time, and have quality products—here comes the glue that holds it all together:
A solid, repeatable routine.

"You have to build that foundation. Make sure that you are consistent with your hair. When your hair starts to feel dry, it's time to wash it."

Why Consistency Matters

  • Your scalp and strands thrive with routine care.
  • Inconsistent routines lead to dryness, breakage, and setbacks.
  • “Start and stop” results mean you never see the true growth you’re working for.

The Basics of a Consistent Hair Care Routine

  1. Cleanse: Wash your hair at least weekly— but when your hair gets dry or gunky.
  2. Condition and Moisturize: Always replenish hydration after cleansing. Adjust to your hair’s needs.
  3. Seal and Protect: Use oils, butters, or creams to lock in moisture and protect ends.
  4. Style: Choose styles that minimize manipulation and last for several days.
  5. Nighttime Care: Protect with silk/satin wraps, bonnets, or pillowcases.
  6. Monitor: Watch for signs that your routine needs shifting (like increased tangling, shedding, or dullness).

“Stay consistent. Be committed to being consistent with your hair. And, of course, you have to have that patience for hair growth because it’s not going to happen overnight.”

How Long Before You See Results?

Growth happens—your challenge is to keep the hair you’re growing.
If you’re consistent for 3-6 months, you’ll likely see dramatic change—not overnight, but definitely not “never.”

Practice #5: Listen to Real Experts, Not Just YouTube “Gurus”

We’re living in the era of the influencer.
Every day, there’s a new video with “5 secret hair hacks” or “the only product you’ll ever need”—but who are we really taking advice from?

"Listen to the Experts, not that YouTube, self-proclaimed gurus. When I say listen to the experts, I'm talking about stylists that have many years of experience. I'm talking about the scientific experts. I'm talking about people who have been in the industry for many years and have a track record of helping their clients or their customers achieve their best hair days."

Why Is Too Much Information Bad?

  • Conflicting advice leads to confusion: One influencer says “moisturize daily.” Another says “use oil every week.” Someone else says “skip oils completely.”
  • Everyone’s hair—and scalp—are different: Self-experimentation is great, but following misleading trends can set you way back.
  • There’s a LOT of misinformation: The hair care world is full of viral “routines” with no scientific or experiential basis.

Finding Reliable Sources

  • Look for credentialed stylists, trichologists, and longtime product formulators.
  • Follow brands and educators with a proven track record—not just a large following.
  • Case studies matter: Seek out testimonials, before/afters, and ongoing science-backed education.

“You might see a YouTuber or influencer who has long gorgeous hair and they're giving you those tips that they did to grow their hair long. And like I see it all the time... And then you find other people who will tell you the complete opposite. I'm that person that tells you the complete opposite—only because I have seen people or influencers telling you that you should be deep conditioning weekly. And I'm like, you don't need to deep condition weekly.”

Getting Past the Myths

Let’s debunk a couple:

  • You do not need to deep condition every week for healthy, long hair.
  • Daily moisturizing? Also a myth for many! Over-moisturizing can throw your hair off balance.

Stick with advice from those who’ve proven outcomes—not just viral content.

Putting It All Together: Your Growth Plan

  • Spending the necessary time and care on it, especially as it grows
  • Investing in solid products that align with your hair and goals
  • Creating (and keeping up) a simple, foundational routine
  • Filtering your advice carefully, tuning into actual experts

Real FAQ: Hair Growth Truths You Aren’t Hearing Everywhere

Q: “Is genetics everything?”
A: Not even close! Genetics influence your rate of growth and how long your hair’s growth phase lasts, but “length retention” is 90% habits and care.

Q: “How long will it take to see real growth?”
A: Everyone is different, but with new healthy habits, most people see changes in softness, manageability, and length retention within a few months.

Q: “Do I have to do a protective style all the time?”
A: No. Low-manipulation and protective styles are helpful, but you don’t have to do braids or twists nonstop. It’s about balancing protection with enjoyment of your hair.

Q: “What about all the products influencers push?”
A: Always check ingredient lists and see what your hair likes. Just because a product goes viral, doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

“So it has nothing to do with your genetics, and everything to do with those practices you are putting into place that will allow your hair to achieve its optimal hair growth potential.”

Final Thoughts

Whether you’ve been stuck at the same length forever or just want to make the most out of every inch, remember:

  • Hair growth is not a race.
  • With a little know-how, a lot of patience, and the right habits, you can see the length you’ve always dreamed of.

Give yourself permission to start small, listen to your own hair, and trust the process. Growth is coming!
