Coconut oil for natural hair has become something of an interesting topic these days. We discussed in our blog previously about how coconut oil can make your hair low porosity. But, we don't want you to fear this oil that has some great benefits to our natural hair. It can be moisturizing to your hair as well as strengthen it when used in moderation. Nowadays, coconut oil is ubiquitous and can be found in almost any supermarket. You can even find it at your dollar store! To learn more about why we love coconut oil for your curly hair, read on.
What is coconut oil?
Coconut oil is an edible oil which has been extracted from the kernel of mature coconuts. This oil is a solid at temperatures below 76 degrees and will melt at higher temperatures because of its high saturated fat content. Coconut oil, being a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft.
According to research, when compared to sunflower oil and mineral oil, coconut oil was the only oil found to reduce the protein loss remarkably for both undamaged and damaged hair when used as a pre-wash and post-wash grooming product.
Coconut Oil for Your Natural Hair
This oil is not without its controversies. As mentioned previously, we reported that for some curlies, coconut oil can make their hair feel more like it is low porosity. The theory is that because it becomes a solid in cooler temps, it can possibly stiffen in your hair. In fact, once in your hands, it will melt into an oil, just rub into your hair.
Coconut oil used on its own, can keep your natural hair from absorbing creams and other products. Our suggestion, is to use it as either a prepoo or hot oil treatment to get the benefits of reducing protein loss. It is also great when mixed with other oils and butters.
Bottom Line
Coconut oil, when used in moderation for natural hair is a good moisturizing product. Its lightweight texture won't weigh your hair down. You can find Organic Coconut oil along with Castor Oil in our Get Slick Hair Smoothie.
