Healthy Kremas Smoothie

When Williams-Sonoma contacted me about their upcoming smoothie challenge, I got super excited and knew this was a sign from the universe that I needed to get back on my smoothie and juicing habit. Having just migrated from NJ to FL and taking a week to stop off in various cities in-between kept me away from the bountiful greens that I was used to consuming. Plus, with the holiday rush, I’d be lucky if I got a meal in during the day (on a good note, I reset my appetite thermostat).

Confronted with a good challenge, I quickly began to go through my mental rolodex of what concoctions I could make. I realized that anything with chocolate and mint was already made a million ways and then I remembered that the holidays meant one special thing to me as a Haitian, Kremas (Cremasse). What is Kremas you ask? It’s a sweet, coconutty drink made with rum and tastes all types of delicious. The only thing about Kremas is that it isn’t the healthiest of drinks (and should be consumed sparingly, however this proves very difficult to do) since most recipes call for cans of sweetened condensed milk or tons of white sugar. I decided that I was going to make a healthier version of this drink that would be great for breakfast or any time of day. My family thought that this couldn’t be done, but I knew otherwise.

The main ingredients of Kremas is coconut milk and cream of coconut. It also includes cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. These were simple enough. I used agave to sweeten and think maple syrup might work as nicely.

Ingredients:
1 can coconut milk
1 cup (or can) cream of coconut
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp nutmeg
2-3 tbsp agave or maple syrup (to taste)
1 haas avocado

Optional:
Flax seeds
Coffeemate Spiced Rum Cake creamer

Place ingredients into your Vitamix or your favorite blender and blend. This drink came out pretty thick; I’d suggest using coconut water or almond milk to thin to a consistency you like. I added the coffeemate creamer to attempt to make it taste as authentic as possible without the alcohol, but I think the next batch I make will be made with rum.

Vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free
